What is Bible Drill?
Bible Drill is a Southern Baptist Convention program involving older children, youth, and high school students in a systematic memorization and location of certain Scriptures.
What is Youth Speakers' Tournament?
Youth Speakers' Tournament is a Southern Baptist Convention program involving high school aged students, grades 10-12 in the writing and presentation of a four-to-six minute speech that expresses his/her Biblical convictions in relation to certain provided topics (see the Resources List for this year's topics).
Why every church should consider a Bible Drill and Youth Speakers' Tournament Program...
-
Holy Scripture admonishes us to teach and train our children in the Word. (Deuteronomy 6:7)
-
Children and youth today, as never before, need the "sword" to combat temptation and give guidance in life (Psalm 119:9, 11).
-
Children and youth want and need a challenge. The Church will grow stronger now and in the future.
How can our children and students be involved?
There are four areas of involvement offered:
- Children's Bible Drill for grades 4-6.
- Youth Bible Drill for grades 7-9.
- High School Bible Drill for grades 10-12.
- Youth Speakers' Tournament for grades 10-12.
How do I get started?
1) Enlist an adult sponsor who will plan, promote, train, and lead your Bible Drill.
It would be helpful to have one for the Children's Bible Drill and two for the Youth Bible Drill and Speakers' Tournament.
2) Decide which translation you will use.
Bible Drill will help participants...
-
Find any book in the Bible.
-
Memorize Scripture.
-
Locate numerous key passages that will be used for a lifetime.
-
Be better equipped for life.
Deciding which translation to use is so important to receiving the full benefit of your program. There are three choices: King James (KJV), the New International Version (NIV), or the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB). Holman Press publishes drill Bibles especially for this purpose. Additional information available at www.lifeway.com.
PLEASE NOTE: If your church chooses to use the NIV translation, you will need to purchase and use Bibles from the International Bible Society because Holman Press has discontinued production of NIV Drill Bibles. The catalog numbers for the recommended NIV Bibles are International Bible Society Catalog Codes 173, 172, or 175. Click here to view NIV Bible.
3) Acquire needed materials
The Children's Bible Drill curriculum is titled Bible Skills, Drills, and Thrills. For Children's Bible Drill materials, contact your nearest LifeWay Christian Bookstore or LifeWay Church Resources at P.O. Box 113, Nashville, TN. 37202-0113 (Phone: 1.800.458.2772) Go to www.lifeway.com for a complete how-to guide and demonstrations.
LifeWay should carry all the items you will need to begin a Children's Bible Drill in your church. Children will be using the BLUE CYCLE in 2010. Because of this, our SBTC office does not provide any Children's Bible Drill materials.
